One of the main benefits of alkaline-forming diets is that it protects the calcium content in your bones.

Based on the research that was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, acidic diets, which are based on phosphoric acid, protein, and cereal, are accountable for straight loss of bone mineralization.

This reinforces the need for increasing the alkali content of the diet for older people to protect their bones from calcium reduction.

Another recent study out of Johns Hopkins University found that potassium citrate has the great potential to boost skeletal health. As well the researchers noted that dietary acid load produced by the typical Western diet may have some great impact to the skeleton by upsetting calcium metabolism. The results show that potassium citrate has the ability to counteract excess acid in the body and enhanced calcium balance.

To make things easier, consuming more foods that are rich in alkaline minerals lessen the risk of bone problems such as bone loss, osteoporosis and bone fractures as results of calcium deficiency.

And with a rapidly aging population, we all need to be concerned about preventing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis leads to bone fractures and bone fractures lead to loss of mobility and loss of mobility leads to isolation and decreased mental, emotional and physical health.

November kicks off National Diabetes Month in Australia.

So it’s a perfect time to shine a light on diabetes prevention and treatment.

It’s a topic close to my heart because it is the number one disease impacting the community, and diabetes and pre-diabetes is a powerful motivator for embarking on a Alkaline Diet journey.

While there are hundreds of resources out there who can help those of you with diabetes, I want sevenpoint2 to be one of them, so I reached out to our sevenpoint2 health experts to get their most valuable tips on how to prevent and treat this common disease.

Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day to keep blood sugar levels stable and help prevent overeating.

Pair protein with carbohydrate rich foods, including fruits and starchy veggies. Protein and fibre rich foods are digested more slowly than carbohydrate rich foods making this combination key for keeping blood sugar levels stable and within a healthy range.

Drink water. Being dehydrated raises blood sugar levels by making your blood more concentrated to help boost energy levels, reduce sugary cravings and supports metabolism.

1. Make sure meals and snacks are high in plant-based foods to boost your nutrient intake throughout the day. Ideas: Raw almonds and blanch off skins. Apple slices, hummus, Kale Pistachio Pesto Dip or Kale Pesto White Bean Dip with veggies. Remember you are trying to alkalize your body system.

2. Minimize or eliminate all processed foods but particularly those that are high in simple sugars. Both sugar sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages should be avoided.

These food ingredients listed below are commonly added to processed foods in order to increase their shelf life, make them look visually appealing & colourful, improve food texture, change the taste or simply because they are cheaper to use than real food ingredients. Unfortunately, these ingredients are not added for our benefit but rather the manufacturer’s benefit.

Many food chemicals have been shown to increase the prevalence of many health concerns, cancer and numerous other diseases and still food regulators who are suppose to protect the consumer actually protect the food industry and allow them to use inferior cheaper synthetic ingredients.

Processed Meats (Sodium Nitrate)

The World Cancer Research Fund recently completed a detailed review of 7,000 clinical studies covering links between diet and cancer. The review found strong evidence that eating processed meat is linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer and a suggested link with lung, stomach, prostate and oesophageal cancer. It was declared that even eating a small amount of processed meat on a regular basis increases bowel cancer risk significantly. More than 1-2 serving per week shows a marked increase, many people would do this daily. Their official recommendation is to avoid processed meats altogether as the official ‘data did not show any level of intake that can confidently be shown not to be associated with risk.’ There is also supportive evidence from a study involving 448,568 people that supports processed meats increasing mortality by 44% due to heart disease and cancer.

Processed meats include bacon, sausages, hot dogs, sandwich meat including fat free turkey, processed chicken breast, ham off the bone, packaged ham, pepperoni, salami and nearly all meat found in pre-prepared meals.

Sodium nitrate is added to processed meats to give it a red fleshy meat colour, adds flavour, increases the shelf life and reduces bacterial growth. Did you know that the USDA tried to ban sodium nitrate in the 70s?

Keep an eye out for these numbers on ingredient lists 249, 250, 251 and 252. This are highly acidic ingredients.
